BAIRRO is a community full of people looking for a challenge. We are located in a central, accessible neighbourhood full of activity. Our members are drawn to the club because we offer something a little different while still promoting discipline and a healthy lifestyle. Our culture promotes healthy competition and encourages individuality within the sport while still being an incredibly supportive community of diverse individuals.
I have tried a number of BJJ schools throughout Edmonton and none have matched Bairro 124. The quality of instruction is incredible. Hoss provides a thorough discussion and demonstration of moves, including the details that turn a passable move into an awesome move. In addition, he also discusses tactics. His teaching is great with lots of encouragement and the right amount of constructive criticism tailored to the individual student. Every class ends with situational sparring so you can immediately practice what you learned.
The atmosphere at Bairro is amazing, and I quickly started to feel like part of the team. Everyone is friendly and very respectful, and I felt encouraged to excel. Cleanliness was top notch. A significant portion of students are women, which I find is usually a good indicator of how welcoming a martial arts school is.
Professor Hoss’s system allows everyone at any level the opportunity to learn and grow. With classes every day, there are plenty of opportunities to perfect the techniques you learn throughout the week. Hoss’s dedication to the club is apparent. He takes the time to ensure every student is getting the most out of their experience. As a coach (for those interested in competing), he is determined to push you to reach your full potential and ensures that when you step onto that mat, you are ready.
Coming to Bairro 124 is more often than not the highlight of my day. This club is young and full of potential. It’s obvious why the fundamental classes are so packed with brand new white belts excited to learn. I can proudly recommend this club to anyone at any skill level.
My kids have been at the school for over two years. BJJ has had a tremendous impact on their young lives. For some kids, the skills come more gradually. Nevertheless, the improvement is continuous. With those improved skills comes confidence. Then all the other stuff that comes with doing sports: the genuine friendships that they form, cheering their teammates on at tournaments, learning to be graceful in wins and losses, just to name a few.
I joined Bairro 124 wondering ‘Am I too old for this? What am I doing?’ I have not regretted my decision once! Instruction from Professor Hoss is amazing. He breaks everything down with solid explanations as to the how/why and is always willing to help you. I never once felt like I didn’t belong here. Everyone is extremely welcoming and, most importantly, encouraging. Hoss has established a really positive and respectful energy in the space.
Bairro 124 is hands-down the best BJJ gym in Edmonton. There are so many classes and it’s very convenient to fit it into my schedule with school. The community is super welcoming, and Hoss is an excellent teacher. I really feel like he cares about each and every student. I highly recommend anyone who wants to try out BJJ to come here!
